Hey guys, it's workshop time!

Massive Black, SixMoreVodka, Safehouse Atelier, and SteamBot Studios along with a bunch of other artists are having an art workshop in San Francisco in November. The workshop is geared at both beginner and professional artists in the entertainment, film, game, comics, illustration, and fine art industries.

Some of the projects that these individuals have worked on off of the top of my head include X-Men, Tron, Assassin's Creed, Skyrim, Guild Wars 1 & 2, Magic the Gathering, Transformers 1 2 3, Left 4 Dead 2, DOTA 2, Red Dead Redemption, StarCraft 2, Diablo 3, and much more.

I will be doing live demos, lecturing, and doing portfolio reviews at the workshop. Availability is limited, and there is also an Early Bird Special, so if you are interested, you should grab a ticket while they are still available - November is just around the corner. Hopefully I will see some of you guys there!

Coke Super Bowl Commercial

Here is an update on some of the entertainment art I did a while back for Coke's Super Bowl commercial featuring orcs and dragons. I did some key art showing the horde of orcs and their dragon, but I didn't design the "good guy" creatures. This was a pretty fun project :)

The 2010 Chesley Award winners were recently announced at Tor.com

I was very honored to have my work nominated for 2 categories: paperback cover illustration with Geist by Phillipa Ballantine, published by Ace, and for interior illustration with Vilcabamba by Harry Turtledove, published by Tor.com.

Anyway, long story short, Geist got the 2010 Chesley for Paperback Book Cover Illustration!

MADE: Art and Conceptdesign Symposium in Berlin

The artists of Massive Black and myself will be joining our friend Marko Djurdjevic and a number of other talented artists in Berlin for Marko's MADE symposium.

The event is a 4 day event limited to 200 guests who will be able to learn and talk with many top entertainment artists from around the globe. The event starts June 17th and runs until the 20th and SEATS ARE LIMITED. If you are interested, head over to the MADE site for more info.

Recent Video Game Work

Here is some recent work (2009) that I did over at Massive Black that I am now allowed to show.

Here's a Game Informer cover I worked on with Mike Bierek for Visceral's Dead Space 2. The basic background and unposed, untextured space suit were provided by Visceral.

Here are a couple of BioShock 2 marketing images I worked on with the help of our 3D team who modeled, textured, and posed the characters. Composition, background elements, lighting, special effects, and additional painting were my job on these.

Here are a couple of character concepts for a project by Emotiv. Emotiv is researching the power of the mind, allowing you to control. I got to try it - it's pretty cool :)

Kotaku T-Shirt from Meat Bun

Meat Bun, known for their video game inspired T-shirts, has released a new Kotaku T-shirt!

I worked with the guys from Kotaku and Meat Bun last year to hammer out the design of Kotaku-tan, a moe anthropomorphic female embodiment of the Kotaku website. For those of you unfamiliar with Kotaku, it is one of the top video game news sites on the internets. The shirt design is marketed heavily to it's die-hard fan base with inside jokes that will escape those unfamiliar with the site.

The Art of Games Exhibition

Finally have some time to update this blog a little. We just got back from a few (much needed!) vacations this summer, most notable of which was our trip to Italy for the Art of Games exhibition! I have a few pieces in the gallery along with many other notable industry artists.

We had an unforgettable time at the show, enjoying the beautiful scenery in the Valle D'Aosta, and making new friends.

The show is still running and will run until November, so if you are in the area or need a destination for a vacation, you should check it out. You can find out more about the show at The Art of Games website.

Character Design Vol 2: The Hero

The second installment of my Character Design series is now available through Massive Black.

In this video I cover my thought process when designing hero characters for video games. I demonstrate by drawing three different hero characters with different goals in mind for each character. In addition to some basic digital painting tips, I spend a lot of time on theory so that the viewer can see where my concepts are coming from. Drawing is only half of Concept Art (the art half), so I really try to stress the concept half.

Hey everyone. ConceptArt.org is hosting another of it's workshops. This time it's in Dallas, Texas at the end of March.

For those of you not familiar with the workshops, they are geared toward people interested in art, illustration, and entertainment art and is open to professionals, students, and hobbyists alike.

Playboy (NSFW)

I got the chance to get a piece into Playboy this past December. This is a piece I did at MassiveBlack for Deep Silver's Ride to Hell. This image was featured in Playboy's "Girl's of Gaming" in their December 08 issue. I also have to give props to Shon Mitchell for modeling out that chopper and Chris Hatala for the 3D posing.

Dragon Age: Origins

BioWare, creators of Mass Effect, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, and Neverwinter Nights is releasing a new game IP soon called Dragon Age.

The first installment, Dragon Age: Origins is slated for a late 2009 release.

Here are some illustrations I did at Massive Black for their marketing campaign, which focuses on the different Origin stories that the player can choose (and play) when starting the game.

Massive Black Volume 1

Massive Black has released it's first artbook which is being published by Ballistic Publishing. We have a LOT of art in here, much of which has not been published beforehand. MicroVisions 3

The Microvisions Auction will be starting on Ebay Monday, June 16th.

For those of you not familiar with Microvisions, it's a charity auction that goes toward the Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship Fund. For the past 3 years illustrator Dan Dos Santos and Tor/Forge/Starscape Art Director Irene Gallo have gathered fine groups of illustrators willing to take time out of their busy schedules to donate work for the auction. All of the donated pieces are 5x7 inches and are originals (no digital/photography).

This was my first year participating and I am really honored (and humbled) to have my work up beside these amazing artists. The artists this year are Daren Bader, E.M. Gist, Joe Jusko, Nic Klein, Todd Lockwood, Glen Orbik, Yuko Shimizu, Shaun Tan, Sam Weber, and myself.

When the auction begins, you can probably just search for "microvisions" in Ebay to find the auction. If you can lend any support, we would really appreciate it.

I Am Legend

Some not so recent news. I did some work last summer with DC Comics and Overbrook Entertainment for the movie I Am Legend. I was commissioned to do two short comics that would be featured in a special promo comic along with some other great artists. You can view that comic in on the web now, here.

The two stories I did were also turned into some pretty cool animatics by Sequence. They are now special features on the DVD release of I Am Legend.

Magic: The Gathering - Shadowmoor

The "Shadowmoor" expansion for Magic: The Gathering has been recently revealed and is slated for a May 2 release. Here are my contributions to this set of cards. I'm particularly proud of this first one, the Wilt Leaf Liege. I have more Magic cards on the way and I will post them when they are released to the public.

Some Old Stuff

Hey guys, here's some old stuff that I haven't gotten around to showing yet. More to come later.

This is a cover I did for Imagine FX June 2007. It was a special issue with four different covers. Each cover was based off of a classic masterpiece. My piece was based off of Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus." Looking back on the image almost a year later, I'm pretty happy with a lot of the elements, but there are a few things that are screaming to be fixed :P I'm really not happy with how I painted the woman on the bottom right. Maybe one day I'll go back and fix it... Or not.

This is a cover I did for the book Lucifers Fængsel (Lucifer's Prison), published by Phabel, a Danish publishing company. I don't think a scene like this ever takes place in the book, but it was fun to paint and I'm glad that they liked the idea. It's really cool when publishers and authors just let you run with ideas :)

Last Man Standing: Round 2

The 2nd round of the Thunderdome: Last Man Standing contest on ConceptArt.org has been posted. Here is my entry for the second round. This round's theme was "Outbreak." I knew everyone would probably draw zombies, so I thought I'd give it a little bit of a twist. I'm actually pretty happy with how this came out given how little time I had to work on it.

For those of you who have not been following the tournament, here's my first round entry. The theme for this one was "Underneath it all."

Well, I decided since I'm too lazy to update my website, I'd start a blog and see if that works.
